Backup Solution Quick Guide

Purpose

This document provides a step-by-step guide for setting up and using Rubrik for creating and recovering snapshots of virtual machines (VMs), databases, and file systems.

Getting Started

  1. Set Up Your RSC Account Password
You will receive an email from Rubrik with a link to create your password. Follow the instructions in the email to set your password.

  2. Log In to Rubrik
Visit https://utep.my.rubrik.com and log in with your newly created credentials.

  3. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Rubrik requires Multi-Factor Authentication. Download an authenticator app (e.g., Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Okta Authenticator) on your smartphone. Add your Rubrik account in the app to enable MFA.

Using Rubrik

Creating a Snapshot

A snapshot, also known as a point-in-time copy of a protected data source, is a full backup of a virtual machine (VM), database, or file system captured at a specific moment.

Steps to create a snapshot:

  1. Hover over Inventory and select All.
  2. Choose vSphere VMs.
  3. Click the desired VM.
  4. On the VM’s Overview page, click Take On-Demand Snapshot.
  5. Select On Demand_SLA, then click Next.
  6. On the confirmation screen, click Confirm.

  7. The snapshot process will begin, and its status can be monitored in the Events section.

  8. A "Succeeded" status indicates a successful snapshot.

Recovering from a Snapshot

You can recover data from a snapshot by following these steps:

  1. Navigate to the VM's Overview page.
  2. Select the desired date in the calendar to choose a snapshot.
  3. Locate the snapshot and click the ellipsis (...) to access the Recover option.
  4. Choose Recover Files and click Next.
  5. Select the files or drives you wish to recover.
  6. Choose the appropriate recovery option and click Recover.

  7. The recovery process will begin, and its status can be monitored in the Events section.

  8. A "Succeeded" status indicates a successful recovery.

Important Note:

The On Demand_SLA snapshot has a 5-day retention period.
If you need a snapshot to be retained for a longer period, please send a request to backupadmin@utep.edu.
