Backup Solution Quick Guide
Purpose
This document provides a step-by-step guide for setting up and using Rubrik for creating and recovering snapshots of virtual machines (VMs), databases, and file systems.
Getting Started
-
Set Up Your RSC Account Password
You will receive an email from Rubrik with a link to create your password. Follow the instructions in the email to set your password. -
Log In to Rubrik
Visit https://utep.my.rubrik.com and log in with your newly created credentials. -
Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Rubrik requires Multi-Factor Authentication. Download an authenticator app (e.g., Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Okta Authenticator) on your smartphone. Add your Rubrik account in the app to enable MFA.
Using Rubrik
Creating a Snapshot
A snapshot, also known as a point-in-time copy of a protected data source, is a full backup of a virtual machine (VM), database, or file system captured at a specific moment.
Steps to create a snapshot:
- Hover over Inventory and select All.
- Choose vSphere VMs.
- Click the desired VM.
- On the VM’s Overview page, click Take On-Demand Snapshot.
- Select On Demand_SLA, then click Next.
-
On the confirmation screen, click Confirm.
-
The snapshot process will begin, and its status can be monitored in the Events section.
- A "Succeeded" status indicates a successful snapshot.
Recovering from a Snapshot
You can recover data from a snapshot by following these steps:
- Navigate to the VM's Overview page.
- Select the desired date in the calendar to choose a snapshot.
- Locate the snapshot and click the ellipsis (...) to access the Recover option.
- Choose Recover Files and click Next.
- Select the files or drives you wish to recover.
-
Choose the appropriate recovery option and click Recover.
-
The recovery process will begin, and its status can be monitored in the Events section.
- A "Succeeded" status indicates a successful recovery.
Important Note:
The On Demand_SLA snapshot has a 5-day retention period.
If you need a snapshot to be retained for a longer period, please send a request to backupadmin@utep.edu.
